50th Anniversary Memory: Suguna Sangaranpillai (HBA 2018)
Studying at the University of Toronto, Woodsworth College, itself is a great unforgettable memory. It was a proud moment for me to graduate as a University of Toronto student.
My major was in Religion and my minor was in Canadian Studies and History. I was a full-time student. I had great professors and some of my favourite professors were Professor Simon Coleman, Laura Beth Bugg, SriLata Raman, Arun Bhrambhatt, Emily Gilbert, Nelson Wiseman and Ian Radforth.
My favourite study spots were Robarts Library and University College Library. My favourite lunch spots were Sydney Smith Cafe, Robarts Cafeteria and Hart House Restaurant.
I was a Secretary of the Woodsworth College Off-Campus Student Association. I was also a Mentor of the Woodsworth College Academic Bridging Program and a Mentor of the U of T E-Mentorship program for incoming first-year students.
After Graduating
I graduated with my degree in June 2018. I had no clue where my degree would take me to where I am today. During my graduation, I still remember when the President of U of T Professor Meric Gertler asked me: “what do you plan to do next?” At that moment, in my mind, I had no clue and I didn't know what to do next.
In August of 2021, I received a job offer from the Government of Canada to work as a Registry Officer. I was so happy that my degree/educational background found me the right job at the right place where I’ve always dreamt of working. I plan to climb the corporate ladder at the same organization.
So, yes if you have a Religion degree and are worried about where you might end up, don't worry! There are plenty of opportunities out there. You will find a suitable job eventually and always remember... never give up!
