Criminology & Sociolegal Studies - 2020 Fall & 2021 Winter
CRI Registration Information
From the Vice-Provost Students web page:
The 2020-21 academic year will be different at the University of Toronto. Our community of students, faculty and staff will learn, teach, research and work in new ways. But what won’t change is our shared commitment to creating rich, inclusive environments for learning, and to pursuing research that unlocks solutions to global challenges, while protecting the health and safety of every member of our community.

Greetings from Professor Macklin, Director, Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies
Welcome to the Criminology and Sociolegal Studies program. We offer a wide array of courses about criminal justice and legal regulation that will expose you to diverse disciplines and methodologies. Our talented faculty is drawn from criminology, sociology, history, political science, social theory and law. Our program will educate, stimulate and challenge you, no matter where your interest comes from or where you plan to go.
As I write these words, we are in the midst of a global pandemic, an uprising against anti-Black racism, and climate change hangs like a dark cloud over the world. By studying Criminology and Sociolegal Studies, you will learn about justice institutions, including police, courts, and prisons. You will engage critically with the relationship between racism, colonialism, other forms of inequality and these institutions. You will also be able to reflect on the role of law in regulating activity in relation to people, the market, society, and the state, and the natural world. And, I hope, you will bring with you an openness to new and diverse perspectives that equip and energize you to grapple thoughtfully and constructively with the challenges that this time and place present to all of us.
I wish you the best in the 2020-21 academic year.
Audrey Macklin
Director, Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies
Chair in Human Rights Law

Important: Enrolment Restrictions in 400 level CRI courses
Registration Restriction in 400 level Seminars - Carefully review the following:
Effective from 9:00 a.m. on July 13 to 8:59 a.m. on July 16: Enrolment Restriction is in place for all 400 seminars offered in the Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 terms.
- Registration limit during this time for students in the Major: 1.0 FCE
- Restriction limit during this time for students in the Specialist: 1.5 FCE
- From 9:00 a.m. on July 13 to 8:59 a.m. on July 16 all extra enrolments/waitlisted courses above 1.0 FCE for majors (1.5 FCE for specialists) will be deleted by the Program office without notice; reinstatement in preferred courses will not be possible if the course is full. No exceptions will be made.
- At 9:00 am on July 16 students may enrol or waitlist additional 400 level courses beyond the aforementioned limits
Why is this restriction in place?
The Program Office guarantees that students who are graduating in June 2021 will be enrolled the minimum course requirements for the Major /Specialist programs. Enrolment start times are determined by the Faculty of Arts and Science and late start-times adversely impact students’ access to 400 level courses. This restriction minimized the impact that a late registration has on students.
What happens during the July 13- July 16 8:59 am restriction period:
From 9:00 a.m. on July 13 to 8:59 a.m. on July 16 all extra enrolments/waitlisted courses above the allowable 1.0 FCEs for majors (1.5 FCEs for specialists) will be deleted by the Program office without notice; reinstatement in preferred courses will not be possible if the course is full. No exceptions will be made.
What happens on July 16 at 9:00 am?
Restriction is lifted. Students can now add/waitlist additional 400 seminar courses.
NOTE: Students are responsible for enrolling as soon as their registration window opens. Failure to do so may impact your ability to enrol in your preferred courses. Students who have a late registration start-time and are still unable to secure the minimum required CRI 400 level courses (0.5 for the major, 1.0 for the specialist) must contact Silvia Cocolo for assistance at silvia.cocolo@utoronto.ca. This must be done in a timely manner, not days or weeks later! Please include your student number and a brief message outlining the issue. Students who already meet the minimum 400 level program requirements (0.5 for the major, 1.0 for the specialist) may not request additional 400 level courses unless they are able to secure a space via ACORN.
Recommended Technology Requirements for Remote/Online Learning

Program Requirements/Double Counting Courses/Degree Explorer not picking up courses
Frequently asked question: Which program requirements do I need to follow? The current calendar doesn't match what is listed in Degree Explorer (DEX).
Answer: The current calendar lists the program requirements that apply for students who will be admitted to the program in the subsequent spring admission cycle. The program requirements that apply to you are those listed on DEX (based on the year you were admitted to the program).
Can I double count courses?
Answer: Always use DEX to track your program (and degree!) requirements - DEX will also use courses that can count towards 2 programs based on the limitations listed in section 'b' under HBA/HBSc Requirements* in the Calendar. A student doing 2 majors must include at least 12.0 different credits in the two majors. This means that if "Major A" is comprised of 8.0 credits and "Major B" is comprised of 7.0 credits, the allowable overlap is 3.0 credits (8.0+7.0=15.0. 15.0 - 12.0= 3.0).
If you have questions about your degree or double-counting courses please contact your Registrar. Questions about CrimSL can be emailed to us.
Question: Why is Dex not picking up my credits?
Answer: Credits are not always picked up by DEX because the course code may not correspond to an existing course. This is normally the case for transfer credits or if a topics course (with the same course but different topic) has been taken more than once. In these cases, you must email the appropriate academic unit to have the credit added manually to your academic record.
Course Delivery
Course removals: Prerequisites, corequisites and exclusions must be observed. Students enrolled in courses for which they do not have the published prerequisites, may have their registration in those courses cancelled without warning at any time if such registration is discovered.
Delivery Method for the 2020 Fall and 2021 Winter term:
-
Online - Synchronous: Course may be completed fully online; some required real-time activities will be held online, as scheduled in the timetable.
-
Asynchronous: Course may be completed fully online without requirement for participation in scheduled, real-time activities.
-
In Person: Some course activities will be held on campus at a set time as scheduled in timetable.
Each course will indicate the delivery method in the timetable, below. Some courses may offer more than one delivery method; these are listed as two distinct lecture sections. The in-person sections have lower enrolments to allow the Faculty of Arts and Science to adhere to provincially mandated social distancing protocols. Students who are not officially registered in the in-person lecture section (or waitlisted for an in-person section) will not be allowed to attend the in-person class. No exceptions.
The Winter session currently lists 2 delivery modes for most course offerings. The in-person course delivery could change to online pending provincial health advisories. The University of Toronto will monitor the situation and make a final determination sometime in the Fall term. Any changes to the delivery mode will be communicated to students as soon as possible and posted on this page.

Assistance:
If you have any questions about your program and /or degree the first place to check your status is Degree Explorer. Degree Explorer is the University of Toronto's degree planning tool where you can review your academic history, degree requirements or use the planner to determine how future course choices might meet your requirements. Do not use the current calendar to figure out your program requirements as it lists the requirements for students who will be admitted to the program next year. Degree Explorer is coded with the requirements that belong to you (based on your year of admission to the program). Your College Registrar’s office can provide advice and guidance if you encounter academic integrity issues. They are there to help you in a more holistic manner, whether it be to understand how other life factors fit in, or to navigate the issues in conjunction with your other courses and degree completion.
If you require help with the CrimSL program and/or CRI course registration you must contact the Program Office at CrimSL@utoronto.ca for assistance. Make sure to include your student id number in your email.

2020-21 Timetable
Keep checking the online timetable frequently as changes may happen over the next few weeks. Note that the course delivery for the Winter session is subject to change depending. If necessary, the course delivery may shift to online only. The Faculty of Arts and Science will confirm by mid-Fall term how courses in the Winter term will be delivered.
Note: You will not be allowed to attend in-person class unless you are officially enrolled in that section. We are required to adhere to social distancing protocols. No exceptions will be made.
