Woodsworth College -- CDHI Undergraduate Digital Project and Research Award Recipients 2025

The Digital Humanities faculty awarded the Woodsworth College — CDHI Undergraduate Digital Project and Research Award to a team of students working on the Learning from Dolls Project that explored artifacts from the María de Lourdes Orozco Cuautle Collection. In DHU437H Emilia Astani, Agnes Hu, and Brianna Silva worked with Prof. Alexandra Bolintineanu and Prof. Nicole Klenk to investigate three dolls from different parts of the world and consider what their presentation, materials, and origins tells us about the role and meaning of dolls in society. Award evaluators were particularly struck by the students' use of several software programs and platforms, including Unreal Engine, Omeka, and Neatline. This year's Honourable Mention goes to Kaylee Hartigan-Go, a fourth-year Digital Humanities and Geography student, who graduates in June. Kaylee's work in Prof. Jennifer Ross' DHU339H class strove to "break and remake" a digital tool. Kaylee chose to reinvent ArcGIS, a standard DH tool used by hundreds of students on campus each semester. SketchGIS is the reinvention that encourages users to prize the qualitative, artistic, and messy aspects of research that often are smoothed or hidden by digital tools.
