A New Option to Create an Inclusive and Safe Space for Students at Woodsworth College Residence

Incoming Woodsworth College Students will be the first cohort to have the option of selecting gender-neutral housing while in residence. Since the opening of Woodsworth’s residence building in 2004, the placement of students was based on their gender, as indicated on their application. In a conversation with Steve Masse, former Assistant Dean of Residence Life, he states how this initiative aims to create a more inclusive environment for those living in residence. In addition to accommodating all students, implementing all-gender housing will alleviate students from the anxiety of disclosing personal information – an added stressor to those already navigating the uncertainties of what first year in university brings. Going forward, students are no longer placed based on their gender, but rather their preference of living in a gender neutral or a single-gender residence suite.
