50th Anniversary Memory: Maria Luisa Abrera-Farol (BA 2009)
As an immigrant and mature student, Woodsworth College gave me all the support and guidance to achieve a degree in Criminology and much more.
Woodsworth College gave me a sense of community, acceptance, and belonging. My professors encouraged and challenged me to think outside the box and seek learning beyond the four wall of a classroom/lecture hall.
The administrative staff are always eager to assist students who are struggling academically and financially (even personal problems!).
My stay at Woodsworth College inspired me to give back as volunteer alumna mentor and through financial donations.
Congratulations on your 50th Anniversary! I hope Woodsworth College will have more years of bringing inspiration to the next generation of students.
After Graduation
A Criminology degree led me to a challenging yet rewarding career in Correctional Services (under the Ministry of the Solicitor General) as a correctional officer. I started my career as a Youth Services Officer at the Roy McMurtry Youth Detention Centre. After three years, I moved to the Toronto West Detention Centre and worked with incarcerated adult males. Currently, I am working at the Toronto South Detention Centre as both video remand and admitting & discharge officer.
