50th Anniversary Memory: Catherine Flanagan (BA 1979)
When I graduated from Grade 13, I went to Teacher's College. That was the last year you could get your teaching degree with only Grade 13 so the classes were filled with people who had always thought about going to Teacher's College and finally did it. What I really wanted to do was go to university but I had no money.
When I moved to Toronto, I got a job in a Public Library and saved enough money to take one course at Woodsworth College. Slowly over many years with marriage and children and teaching along the way I got my honours degree and I was very proud.
When you come from a poor family, going to university is a dream. I worked throughout high school and in the summers. My goal was always to learn. Some of the happiest moments in my life were sitting on the floor in the stacks at Roberts doing research. Loved Fort Book.
After Graduating
I worked at several places: Adult Basic Literacy Centre, and English as a Second Language School. With the board, I was a Supply Teacher and I also taught Grade 2 and Grade 6, then I worked for several years at a small private school for kids with learning challenges.
