Talk abstract:
Abstract:
The Web is entering a new age. Initially it was a broadcast medium for publishing information. (The Read Web). Web 2 was a collaborative communication medium: a platform for mass organizing online and for commerce (The Read/Write Web). Intermediaries like banks and social media companies performed key functions like moving and storing value, verifying identity, and keeping records. Web 3 (The Value Web) is a decentralized platform where value -- assets like critical information, money, securities, contracts, deeds, intellectual property, and cultural assets like art and music -- can be moved, stored, and transacted peer to peer. Is Web 3 real? Many say it will be more disruptive to old industries and business models than the web’s first incarnations. Why should we all care?
