Your instructor is your first step for advice regarding issues that relate to your studies in a particular course. The Employment Relations Program Office can provide you with advice on academic issues and problems that relate to or affect your Employment Relations studies. Your Registrar’s office can help you with advice on your degree studies and/or personal problems that affect your performance in your studies. You are expected to manage your studies and this includes asking for help and advice!
Standards and Evaluation
The Employment RelationsProgram Office as a whole has no single, fixed method of evaluating the work of its students. Most courses have formal final examinations. Others may have take home assignment or classroom tests. In almost all courses, the final mark is determined on the basis of term papers, or some other kind of written work, and some form of examination. In some courses or seminars, the final mark may be partially based upon student participation in group discussions or presentations. In every course, the requirements and the method of evaluation are made clear in the classroom at the beginning of term.
Students should make sure that they understand well in advance what the requirements are in any course they are taking. If they have doubts they should approach the instructor directly. The Faculty of Arts and Science deadlines for submission of all written assignments to individual instructors must be adhered to. Individual instructors do not have the authority to grant any extensions past these dates.

Reassessment of Term Marks
The Faculty of Arts and Science deadlines for reassessments are posted on their website.
1. Reread of Term Work
Students who wish to request re-marking of an assignment or term test, must submit a detailed memo in writing in which you specify the questions or portions of the assignment or exam that you believe were marked incorrectly (and why you think the mark was incorrect), together with the original assignment or test. These should be submitted to the original marker of the work, whether that was the TA or instructor. The TA or instructor will respond to you, also in writing, with the reevaluation of the work. Late requests will not be accepted. Please note the following guidelines:
A) Requests for re-marking must be submitted in writing. Neither the TA nor the instructor will re-mark any test or assignment based on a student’s verbal request. The deadline for requesting the first re-marking is two weeks from the date the term work was made available for pickup.*
B) If the TA re-marks your assignment, and the student is not satisfied with the TA’s assessment he/she may request a final re-marking by the instructor. The deadline for requesting a second re-marking is two weeks from the date the original re-mark was made available for pickup.
C) Any re-marking done by the instructor will involve the entire assignment, not simply the questions or portion you believe were scored improperly. Note that in the course of re-marking your assignment, the instructor may discover errors or defects that were not originally detected on the assignment or mid-term test. As a result, it is possible that the revised mark may actually go down, rather than going up or staying the same. Submitting a request for a re-mark or the appeal to the instructor means that the student accepts this condition.
*Exceptions: After the end of term, requests for rererads must be submitted, by the appropriate deadline, to the Undergraduate Coordinator in the Employment Relations Program Office.
3. Recheck of Course Mark
If a student believes that there has been an arithmetical error in calculating the course mark, he/she may request a “recheck.” This can be done with or without purchasing a photocopy of the final examination. The student must fill out a “Request for Recheck of Course Mark” form, which is available at the Office of the Faculty Registrar and on the Faculty Registrar’s web site. The student must indicate precisely where he/she thinks the error has occurred. The Department concerned will check that all answers have been marked, and that the marks have been added correctly; the examination will not be reread. The Department will also check that all term work marks have been correctly calculated. There is no charge for this procedure. The completed form must be submitted to the Office of the Faculty Registrar within six months of the final examination period. If the mark is changed as a result of this review, the photocopy fee will be refunded.
If there is any discrepancy between the recorded term marks on file in the Employment Relations Program office and the term marks the student claims he/she achieved the student will be required to provide the Employment Relations Program office with the original graded term work in order to resolve the matter. No exceptions will be made.
4. Departmental Appeals
Students who feel that an assignment or term test has been unfairly graded may seek resolution through the following successive stages: the course instructor (if the assignment was graded by a Teaching Assistant, approach this person first), then the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Students should consult the Faculty of Arts and Science Calendar for details on how to resolve issues concerning the pedagogical relationship of the instructor and the student, and under what circumstances a petition may be initiated.
Missed Term Test
Students who miss a term test will be assigned a mark of zero for that test unless they satisfy the following conditions:
1. Students who miss a term test for reasons entirely beyond their control may, within one week of the missed test, submit to the instructor a written request for special consideration explaining the reason for missing the test, and attaching appropriate documentation, such as the UofT medical certificate.
2. If a written request with documentation cannot be submitted within one week, the Employment RelationsProgram Office may consider a request to extend the time limit.
3. A student whose explanation is accepted by the instructor or Program Office department will be entitled to a makeup test (unless otherwise stated in the course outline).
4. If the student is granted permission to take a makeup test and misses it, then he or she is assigned a mark of zero for the test unless the Employment Relations Program Office is satisfied that missing the makeup test was unavoidable. No student is automatically entitled to a second makeup test.
5. A student who misses a term test cannot subsequently petition for late withdrawal from the course without academic penalty on the grounds that he or she has had no term work returned before the drop date.
Students must show that they have acted responsibly and with good judgement in observing the University regulations. If students have failed to observe deadlines, to heed warnings or to organize their academic priorities accordingly, or if they have been negligent about their responsibilities, then special consideration may not be warranted. The petition process is not a means to salvage courses and the academic record, after the fact. For more information and deadlines please check the Faculty of Arts and Science website.
Term Work Assignments
It is the student’s responsibility to keep all his/her graded term work beyond the end of term. If a student believes that there has been an arithmetical error in calculating the course mark, the Employment RelationsProgram office will require the original graded term work in order to resolve the matter - no exceptions will be made. Unclaimed term work will be kept in the Employment Relations Program office for six months beyond the end of the course.

Grades on Blackboard
Some instructors may choose to post assignment, test or other assessment marks in Blackboard. However, final course marks will only posted in ROSI once the marks have been approved by the Faculty of Arts and Science. Instructors are not authorized to release final grades to students. For issues regarding grade discrepancies students must follow the guidelines listed in the “Reassessment of Marks.”
Writing at the University of Toronto
The ability to think critically and to write well-organized, clear, grammatical prose is important to your work in many courses. It will improve your chances if you apply to graduate or professional schools and will also give you an advantage in the workplace. To help you develop your writing skills, the university provides a range of instructional resources.
The Writing Centres provided free of charge at undergraduate colleges, will help you develop the writing skills needed throughout your university studies. They offer both individual and group instruction. For links to the writing centres please click here.
In individual consultations, trained writing instructors help you improve your ability to plan, write, and revise, using your assignments from any subject as examples. Some instructors specialize in the needs of students using English as a second language. You are entitled to use the writing centre of the college where you are registered or living in residence, or the department where you are taking a course.
