Alumni-Students Mentorship Program

Recruiting Mentors for the 2018-19 Academic Year

As the Alumni-Students Mentorship Program (ASMP) is drawing to a close, we are already actively recruiting mentors for next year.  The program had forty pairs of mentees and mentors this year and we would like to increase that number next year.

The ASMP is a one-on-one mentoring program which offers professional development for third and fourth year Woodsworth College students. Alumni mentors share their knowledge and experiences in the work force with mentees in a series of meetings over the course of 5 months.

On being a mentor:

Being a mentor is a rewarding way to volunteer and give back. Alan Comeau, who has been a mentor in the program for the past three years says, "the program is a great volunteer opportunity to help a graduating student towards their career goals. It is very personally rewarding to donate your time and give something back to the university."

Benefits of mentoring:

  • Mentors have the satisfaction of knowing they are helping students understand the unfamiliar and often daunting world they will face after graduation
  • Mentorship is a valuable practice to help develop leadership skills
  • Mentors gain heightened self-awareness and a profile as an active volunteer and supporter of their school

Who are ideal mentors?

  • Professionals both young and seasoned who are willing to impart  knowledge and share their experiences
  • Alumni who can commitment to nurturing and supporting a student’s development by sharing wisdom, listening and providing supportive guidance and constructive feedback

Here is what some of our past mentees have said about their experience:

"Having Jen as a mentor gave me access to unfiltered, tried-and-true advice about navigating life and the workplace after university. This is the kind of learning we desperately need, and as such I’m incredibly grateful for the program.”

"This program was extremely beneficial as my mentor was not only helpful and supportive, but also easy to talk to. Going into the program was intimidating, but it definitely helped me gain perspective.”

Networking Opportunities and skills enhancement:

Two receptions are held every year for mentors and mentees to get together and network. The program also offers a networking how to skills development workshop each year.
